How to Choose a Tarot Deck – by Kate Braun

Choosing a Tarot deck can be a daunting process. There are so many different designs, artists, and themes.

How To Choose A Tarot DeckYou may “Google” various sites that will show you pictures of the individual cards in various decks; you may observe the various decks various Tarot readers use at Metaphysical Fairs and ask those practitioners why they chose a particular deck; but ultimately you should select the deck that most appeals to you. You should also be prepared to try a different deck if your choice doesn’t work for you as you hoped it would.

P.D. Ouspensky’s The Symbolism of the Tarot says that Tarot can interface with other metaphysical systems such as astrology, numerology, alchemy, and Kabballah. Some decks include symbols for other metaphysical systems on each card, some do not. This is another factor to consider when you select a deck.

The Rider-Waite deck, drawn and painted by Pamela Colman Smith in 1910, is very popular. It was the first Tarot deck readily available with pictures on all 78 cards. If the deck you choose has pictures on all 78 cards, it is safe to assume that it derives to some degree from Ms. Smith’s designs.

Rider Waite Tarot Deck - The Magician - source Wikipedia Commons

Rider Waite Tarot Deck: The Magician (source Wikipedia Commons)

There is also the matter of the size of the cards. Some decks are available in a variety of sizes but a typical Tarot deck is bigger than the modern deck. If you are new to Tarot, it will take time to stretch the ligaments in the fingers to be able to easily shuffle Tarot cards. Shuffling your deck and laying out the cards every day will be an easy exercise both for loosening the fingers and becoming readily acquainted with the individual cards and the patterns found in the layout.

Other types of decks useful for metaphysical purposes are also readily available and may be confused with Tarot. If the deck you are drawn to does not have 78 cards in it, it is not a Tarot deck. It could be Oracle or Angel or other cards, and would be used differently from Tarot cards. The main difference is that Tarot can give guidance, answer questions, indicate the better choice among options, suggest an appropriate action; Oracle cards may be used to indicate a meditation for the day, illuminate inner truths, reflect more immediate concerns.

It is important to read widely about Tarot, both card interpretations and layouts. The deck you choose will have a booklet included with it that will provide basic meanings for each card and probably the Celtic Cross layout. This booklet is a good place to start, but the more you read, the better your interpretations are likely to be. You may find a different layout pattern more meaningful. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to lay out the cards or determine their meaning; if the response to your interpretation is “that’s right,” you are doing a good job. Similarly, you may choose to incorporate reversed meanings (when the card is laid down upside-down) of the cards or not. It is not a matter of “right” or “wrong,” just a matter of personal preference. Use what works best for you.

Rachel Pollack has written several excellent books about the Rider-Waite deck. Arthur Edward Waite also wrote about the deck Ms. Smith drew and painted, albeit in rather abstruse language. The important thing is to read widely and to take from your reading whatever information is useful to you, which need not be the entire article or book.

From this framework, you’ll be well on your way as you navigate your path with the Tarot.

Soul-Speak: Connecting to Your Inner Self – by Leslie Werling

When the soul speaks it can take on any language, any form.

It can be an act, a phrase, an image, a voice. For each of us it is familiar, powerful, loving and kind.

It is our Truth.

To fully achieve this blessed connection takes a quiet mind and an open heart.

Doing so is not a gift or an act that one person deserves more so than another, but a connection we should all aim to achieve. It is within this realm that all of our answers lie, where healing awaits and understanding grows.

How beautiful would life be if we could all achieve such a high level of communication! I can imagine a world filled with joyful, loving, successful people living harmoniously as one. Peace, love and prosperity would reign supreme and positive energy would flow abundantly, encouraging life where boundaries don’t exist and dreams come true at the blink of an eye. It would be beyond amazing. It would be… Heaven!

Fortunately, we all have the ability, the right and the opportunity to connect to our souls at such a level. For some, the life path makes the potential to achieve such a connection greater than for others – easier than for others. Make no mistake … we all have the ability, the right and the opportunity. If we can harness time and energy to put toward a connection with the Higher Self we could eventually remove the blocks we’ve created and allow the awakening (or should I say reawakening?) to hear our souls speak!

I offer my belief that the best way to achieve such a beautiful gift is through the art of meditation.

Through countless readings and other healing exercises I have been blessed to offer, seekers are continuously encouraged to open their own channel to the Higher Self in order to get the answers they seek. This art form can mean something different to each individual. Artists are able to connect when creating their craft, musicians when the playing or singing, athletes when they are in sport, yogis when they are in practice. For me it means simply channeling the white light of the Creator or stepping into the soul light that lies within the physical body. It’s an experience that can be self-led or guided, and which method you choose and when is often best determined by your current ability to achieve mental focus.

For a more traditional act of meditation, if you are able to focus on your inner light and can quiet a chattering mind, try connecting to the soul through self-led practice. A quiet atmosphere is strongly encouraged, or at least surroundings where the natural noise will aid you in deepening your focus. This is especially great when you have a clear concept of what you want or need to achieve in this “space” and you have practiced the art before.

For times in life when a quiet mind and concentration are hard to come by, guided meditation through a class, podcast, video or other means is often recommended. Using an outside element to connect is fantastic because it allows you to lose yourself in the meditation on a level that can be difficult to achieve when walking ourselves through practice. It can also be responsible for introducing us to a multitude of experiences we may never have known were possible in meditation!

Whichever means you use to connect, know that it is never the “wrong” way.

And that different circumstances in life may call for variation in how you may connect at any given time.

The important element here is that you are reaching inward versus always seeking the answers externally… Getting the guidance you need directly from your soul!

Once you developed a practice don’t hesitate to ask your guides for signs to support the insight you have received. This may come to you in many forms: reoccurring thoughts and feelings, repetition of something you hear or see, the presence of animals, dreams, numbers, etc. Pay particular attention if you have an “experience” while pondering the topic you are seeking answers to. If you are unsure of what the guidance is, you can ask for clarity in a way that will be undeniable for you to grasp.

As you work toward gaining insight from your Higher Self, be sure to get your mind out of the way and open your heart to the message.

When the soul speaks it will always lead you toward your Truth so that joy and prosperity can come into your life!

Gifts from Lemuria – by Teri Van Horn

Throughout history, we’ve heard about how magnificent Atlantis was.

That it was this magical island, where humanity was extremely advanced and where we first learned to work with the energy of crystals, as well as being the originators of the Mystery School teachings of the Hindu, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Western European civilizations.

It’s been ‘common knowledge’ that Atlantean and Lemurian cultures have existed in excess of ten thousand years ago. However, I’ve learned over the years, that many of the things that we’ve learned about Atlantis and her sister island, Lemuria, were very different.

Based on many past life travels and astral traveling even now, I know that Lemuria came well before Atlantis, although the Atlantean civilization was eventually formed while Lemuria was in existence – they both were destroyed by a catastrophic event. Some say it was the flood, some say that it was massive explosions. Either way, two amazing and powerful civilizations were destroyed, with little remnants to share with the rest of us.

We know quite a bit about Atlantis: it was cultured, it was a gleaming island city, a circle within a circle of some of the most intelligent beings who have ever graced this planet. When I see Atlantis, it reminds me of a futuristic space city – shining silver and (of course) lots of crystal. The overall tone of this magnificent island is all about technology. Lots of gleaming buildings, temples, even the houses are white and shiny. I see it a cross between something in a sci-fi movie, mixed with ancient Grecian/Roman architecture. The residents are in white, silver or metallic fabrics. Quite simply, it’s a shining star on the planet.

But… we also know that Atlantis became corrupt – the people acquired a thirst for power and its magnificence faded dramatically. This is what led to the massive catastrophe that ended both islands.

However, Lemuria was the true jewel in Earth’s crown – in fact, I’d be willing to venture to say our galaxy’s crown! Until recently, not much was written about Lemuria, and it’s still difficult to get much information about this stunning land.

The first time I ‘visited’ Lemuria was a few years ago, when working with an ancient piece of jade. I met a new guide at that time and she took me to Lemuria in her ship. First we traveled over the lands, which were magnificent. If you’ve seen the movie Avatar, you know what the black/white version of Lemuria is. She is so much more beautiful than what we saw in that movie, but in many ways, very similar. Lemuria was a tropical paradise! Where you saw bright and shiny metal buildings in Atlantis, Lemuria had buildings made of a superior form of clay and thatch. (That is the best way I can describe it.) They also used stones in their buildings, along with wood – but only trees that had fallen naturally. Lemurians excelled in conservation.

Where Atlanteans were cold and overly logical and technical – Lemurians were all about love for their community and nature. In fact, although they had villages, everyone worked together in each aspect of daily life. Some grew food, others harvested, some helped raise the children, others taught, some were healers, others were organizers, and still some were the most beautiful musicians ever heard. Every person in that society had a role that they filled within 110% of their ability.

If you had seen Lemuria superficially, you’d think that it was a bunch of natives – yet they were really the more advanced culture, because they valued all life – not just humans and what they could create, and they were highly intelligent. In truth, they were able to form a direct connection to the energy bodies of plants and animals around them. According to mystic Rudolf Steiner, the Lemurians were born magicians in all fields of lower human activities. (Meaning anything that wasn’t considered to be high technology, like Atlanteans).

Lemurian institutions of higher learning focused on teaching initiates secret techniques enabling them to control the forces of nature by direct contemplation. It is said that these Lemurian Mystery Schools “stood far above what mankind has since acquired in the way of arts and sciences.” They were called “colleges of will power and of the clairvoyant power of the imagination. From them emerged men who became, in every respect, rulers of the others.”

Yet for those in the Lemurian Mystery Schools, life was exalted beyond what we know today. “The uninitiated, of course, stood under the magical influence of the initiated,” says Steiner. “It was also natural that the latter considered themselves sanctified personages. . . They looked into the creative workshop of nature. They experienced a communion with the beings who built the world itself. One can call this communion an association with the gods.”

In the later periods of the more highly developed Lemurian civilization, the role of female initiates was paramount, and that these female initiates were responsible for planting the seeds of the knowledge of good and evil in the soul of mankind, as well as for developing the first human awareness of beauty, and for cultivating the first human language, which was a kind of song.

Thus all subsequent human civilizations owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Lemurian Priestesses, who created the first Mystery Schools teaching enlightenment through direct experience of nature, the first human system of ethics, the first art and highly developed system of aesthetics and the first, prototypical human language.

Those from Lemuria were the original Lightworkers… many who have come back to Earth at this time to help bring us back to these utopian times. In fact, although they did not necessarily travel to Atlantis, they could feel – through the Earth’s vibrations – that there was trouble brewing on those islands.

Once the Lemurians began really hearing the warning messages of the Earth and Mother Nature, they knew that life as they knew it was about to end. Therefore, they began implanting their knowledge into very special quartz crystals and planted them around the planet, as Earth Keepers, which are exalted beings whose primary purpose was to act as the guardians of the ecosystem. These amazing crystals were also to be used to impart their vast knowledge of nature, crystals, herbs, music, medicine, social constructs, and energy work to us… once we were ready to receive that information.

Over the last thirty years, rock hounds, Lightworkers and crystal healers have discovered a unique variety of quartz crystal found in one remote region of Brazil, as well as the mountains of Arkansas, the Himalayas, and other regions, (more being discovered daily) which are said to resonate with the energy signature of the ancient Lemurian civilization, and which are highly prized for their unique metaphysical properties.

The Lemurians were said to be Earth Keepers, connected to the energies of those Divine Beings who structured the physical manifestation of Mother Earth and who provided the energetic templates for the web of life on this planet, which remain today in the etheric plane, alongside the Akashic Records.

The Lemurian quartz crystals have been identified as tools of the present era’s Lightworkers whose task is to preserve the environment — those known as Protectors of Mother Earth.

These Protectors, modern day Earth Keepers, often use Lemurian crystals to unify their energies with Lightworkers throughout the world and beyond, to perform collective meditations for the benefit of the environment and all the beings who dwell on Earth.

Many of us are working towards this today – helping to save the Earth from all of its destructive forces – through human negligence, as well as negative energies who have been attacking this planet for many 1000’s of years.

This is part of my purpose here on Earth, just as it is to teach others about the powerful qualities of Lemurian crystals, so that together, we can all create the Utopia that we once lived back in Lemuria.

Meditation In Theory And Practice – by Kramer Wetzel

Because there are some questions that Google can’t answer….

Meditation - Spiritual Life Productions - Austin TexasMaybe 28 years ago, a mentor at the time exposed me to true Zen Buddhism meditation. Little tough pillow, a wood stand like a doll’s table, super-esoteric texts, and sitting zazen for several hours a day.

I was exposed. Material crossed my consciousness. I moved on.

In Austin, all those years, I developed a “walking meditation” practice. From the old place in east Austin, it was maybe four miles around the eastern loop of the hike and bike trail, and that was the first iteration. It gave me many experiences that have long been incorporated into my horoscopes and readings. There’s also a sense that I was answering a need for meditation with a walking version. Turns out that walking meditation is a formal process.

As I negotiated a spot in a trailer park in 78704, that too furthered my walking practice of meditation, as my mileage increased. Ostensibly, I would have a destination, BBQ or TexMex, and a dip in the holy waters of Barton Springs, as kind of a cleansing, ritual dunk in the soft, cold, spring-fed waters. There were days when a dip in the creek and a splash of patchouli worked for bathing; yes, the good old days.

Mileage varied, and trailer parks have been replaced by high-rise buildings or similar developments. With the advent of my first, an iPod “Mini” then an Apple “Shuffle,” I started to lose track of the old ways of my walking mediation. Think the portable music player just about killed it off, totally; at least for me.

As a disembodied notation, only tangentially related, the walking meditation has proven as a very effective method of getting answers when nothing else works. To this day, on rare occasions, I’ll unplug and tune in by tuning out. Still works. Decades of Austin’s trails pays off by walking meditation, and the cities don’t care– that is, it is a method that is location independent.

But that first mentor: I recall sitting in his apartment, gradually going over what meditation is; how the thoughts are like bubbles. Those thoughts come up in meditation; we look at it, acknowledge it, but then: the thought drifts off. In that first instruction, it was implied to be like soap bubbles, and that the thoughts would drift ever-heavenwards.

Then a couple of years ago, girlfriend asks, suggests, “I want to take a meditation class, would you go with me?”

Sure. So I was formally introduced to “Transcendental Meditation,” the perfect marriage of East and West. 20 minutes a day, twice a day. Timer on the iPhone is set for it. Been doing this for years. First thing in the morning, then around supper time.

Years later, girlfriend asks if I know anything about Zen. When I wrote about books that stay in travel bags, like “101 Zen Stories,” I know I’ve been carrying around some version of that text for more than a dozen years, possibly longer. One copy is dog-eared and battered, barely recognizable in its original form —

So I reached up, and I pulled three texts off the shelf, including Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, and I handed her the texts. One is relatively rare, and I’ve circulated it some, citing it on occasion.

Would I be interested in a meeting at the San Antonio Zen Center? Quick, affirmative answer on that. Walk in, shed the shoes at the door (well, kick off sandals), then with a Buddha,  candle, and couple of sparse flowers, sit on a pillow and fold my hands.

“We sit for twenty minutes, first.”

I’m in.

“Meditation: because there really are some questions Google can’t answer.”

Once, for a part of the lecture series at Nature’s Treasures, I was filling in for another reader and tasked with a short presentation on meditation.

Over the years, again and again, I’ve explained that meditation takes many forms. As I lead a more sedentary lifestyle now, I can sit in an approximate lotus, maybe with the help of a pillow, and I can be still for a spell.

Quiet the mind. Listen to what bubbles up. For many years, meditation, for me, was on Austin’s Hike & Bike trail — it was Town Lake at the time. Fishing pole was optional, but often in hand.

The last time I was in a zen center, in meditation, all I kept getting was an image of Samuel Jackson, in character, saying, “Namaste…” with the appropriate juice and inflection.

“Meditation: because there really are some questions Google can’t answer.”

“Buddhism teaches union with the Void, while Taoism teaches union with the Tao. At first they seem opposite directions. But the synthesis of these doctrines appeared in Zen, which taught that the oneness of the Void, wherein all reality is subsumed, could be understood as an encompassing whole or continuum, as in the Tao. Both are merely expressions of the Absolute. The Buddhists unite with the Void; the Taoists yearn to merge with the Tao. In Zen the two ideas reconcile.”
– from Thomas Hoover in “The Zen Experience.”

In a reading with a client, I was recalling my recent experiences with a zen center. In the client’s version, the zen center had an abbot who would come along and poke the folks who fidget.

“I kept getting hit with the stick.”

“No pain, no gain? Bring your own whips and chains.”(Gemini)

Poke me with a stick? I’m not going back, eliciting the Gemini comment.

What meditation can be? Again, an early reference to East Austin before it was hip and trendy: I think there was a shooting outside my door, late one night. Normal, back when it was rough neighborhood; at least, after dark.

I was stretched out on the couch, reading an early primer about Runes. The author, Bloom, I think, had an introductory note about the nature of meditation. I can’t seem to lay my hands on either the notes or the original book, so this is from faded, unreliable brain memory: “Lying on the couch, underlining a passage in book, can be meditation.”

Seems amusing to me, considering the real rune people told me what a bad book that was. I still have a bag with runes, but that’s not my chosen form of divination —

Regardless, I’m always curious about the divisive nature among so-called enlightened New Age healers and such. My take-away from that text was twofold: runes have no curved lines (with no direct translation), and, more important, meditation can be as simple as stretching out on the couch and underlining a passage in a text.

There was a class offered through the various zen centers, and an advanced one was coming up, for “wall staring.” I had a cat that was an adept; she could stare at the wall for hours.

I’ve willfully demonstrated my ignorance, but also charted a progression from a supine position as mediation, to walking meditation, to a more zen-like state of suspended mental discourse. This encapsulates the ideas and what I’ve learned thus far. The patterns emerge as bubbles of thought. I arrived at my understanding. It all started with that mentor, some 28 years ago.

Weird. One cycle of Saturn.

What Is Aura Photography? – by Marsha Perkins

Aura Photo of Rick Ferguson - One Force Productions

Aura Photo of Rick Ferguson – One Force Productions

Aura photography is a way to capture the energy of your aura in a visual process that we can also analyze.

Special equipment is used in conjunction with a special camera to capture your essence on film.

Your aura tells a great deal about you. Getting an aura photo taken is like getting a picture taken of your soul.

An aura photo will show light energies that are in and around you.  And the colors and positions all mean things.

The different colors in your aura come from the energy centers of your body, called chakras. Chakra was the Sanskrit word meaning Wheel of Light. The seven chakras include the physical, emotional, spiritual and even intellectual facets of who you really are.

Aura photo of Julia Chambers - Heretical Numerology

Aura photo of Julia Chambers – Heretical Numerology

The colors on your left side are energies that you are attracting or that are around you. The people and environment around you can affect this area. These colors may represent new changes for you.

The colors on your right are the energies you send out. A very smart person may have yellow here. A psychic may have purple here. A very busy person may have red. Nurturing people often have green here.

The colors over your head are representative of what is going on right now. If you are a spiritual person you may have a halo here.

Aura photo of Fran Caruso

If you are really lucky, you may have spirits and guides in your picture. Often a family member who has passed away will show up, usually as a whitish, shapeless area near you.

One of the most common questions about aura photography is “Does my aura change?”

The answer is yes it can.  Your aura changes when you change. There are people who don’t change for years. There are some people who can pick up a crystal and their colors change.

When you go through major events in your life, your colors will become different. Examples would include falling in love, aging, becoming a parent or moving to a new city. Even significant injuries can show up in your aura photo.  Taking classes in spiritual awareness is a terrific way to develop a halo.

Curious about aura photography and what your aura photo can say about you?  Want to learn more?  Come to the next Austin Metaphysical Life Fair, check out our collection of aura photos and get one for yourself too!

Fairy Godmothers: The Lineage of Austin’s Metaphysical Fair – by Michael Abedin

What was the first metaphysical expo in Austin?

Long-time Austin psychic Elaine Ireland remembers the early 70’s at Aqua Fest, a ten-day August event featuring Town Lake drag boat racing, “Ethnic Nights,” and the créme de la créme” of Austin society riding in river parades.

Elaine Ireland and Joe Nicols - Austin Metaphysical Life Fair - Texas - Spiritual Life Productions

Elaine Ireland and Joe Nicols

Seems numerologist Rita Brown did a reading for someone on the Board of Directors and got invited to read in the circular hallway around the old Palmer Auditorium, a geodesic dome where the Long Center now stands. Five or six readers came along, including Ireland.

“We started every day at noon and read until 9pm, ” she recalls. “There was a line all day, and the reader that was available was who next person in line got.”

Fast forward to 1994, two years before the big Whole Life Expo hit town, when Julie Wilson debuted Austin’s Metaphysical Fair. Declining health forced Wilson to step down in 1999, and she bequeathed her beloved event to Latrell Maples, who ran it until 2011 – when life once again intervened, and the Metaphysical Fair once again got bequeathed.

Integrity, and a left brain

The bequeathee this time was Marilyn Waggoner, who wasn’t a metaphysical practitioner, but was well versed in the community. With an engineering background (inspecting planes for the Navy, and hospitals for OSHA), she brought a new element to a metaphysical world not always grounded in the everyday world – a left brain, ready to organize, make decisions, and revitalize the event.

“I’m on the floor every hour, talking to exhibitors, listening to feedback. You can’t do an event like this without the utmost integrity.” She screens every applicant, and when a waiting list developed for exhibitors for the renamed Metaphysical Life Fair, she started another quarterly two-day event strictly for holistic practitioners – the Holistic Life Fair, naturally.

Austin Metaphysical Life Fair - Texas - Crystal balls and skullsAlong the way, her Spiritual Life Productions picked up the Spirit of All That Is Holistic Healing Art Fair held at Nature’s Treasures (a monthly Saturday event with lower booth rentals and free admission), the online Austin Alchemist company, and an Aura Photography business.

Asked if she’s planning on branching out into, say, metaphysical wedding chapels and dog grooming parlors, she laughs and shrugs. “We could use a lot of people in our corner right now.”

Staying in Balance with Solstices and Equinoxes – By Kate Braun

One of the things I look for in my Tarot readings is the state of balance or imbalance in my clients’ lives.

When we are balanced, life tends to be easier to manage; when we are out of balance, it can be harder to make decisions or to see what the better option might be.

While I cannot and will not tell my clients what to do or how to live their lives, I do strive to help them find a better balance from which to make better choices. Balance is not only a matter of conscious thinking, it is also connected to the seasonal rhythms of Planet Earth.

Since these seasonal rhythms are felt by everyone, Spirit prompts me to share these thoughts with you.

Winter Solstice Sunrise at Stonehenge 1980’s

Dear Reader…

Balance is an important part of our lives. We strive to maintain balance between work and play, waking and sleeping, friends and family. There is also the balance we notice, consciously or not, as seasons progress during the year, especially in the Solstices and Equinoxes.

Solstices have to do with the most noticeable differences between daylight and dark hours. The word “solstice” derives from the Latin solstitium, a combination of sol, the sun, and stitium, to make stand still. The Winter Solstice, on or about December 21, is the shortest day and longest night of the year; the Summer Solstice, six months later, on or about June 21, is the longest day and shortest night of the year. Both solstices are times when the sun appears to stand still in the sky. Between the solstices are the equinoxes. The word “equinox” derives from the Latin aequus, meaning “equal”, and nox, meaning “night”; both equinoxes are times when hours of daylight and darkness appear to be the same.

In the Long Ago, solstices and equinoxes were of great importance. They were used to mark the proper times to plow, to sow, to harvest, and the time to let the land lie fallow. There was a recognized time, as Pete Seeger has sung, “for every purpose under heaven”. Each culture devised its own rituals to honor the seasons, but all did. Today, especially with the effect of Daylight Savings Time, it can be easier to ignore these times of balance and changing balance. Yet on some level we are aware that the days grow longer from the Winter Solstice to the Spring Equinox, that at the Spring Equinox day and night hours are the same, and that days continue to lengthen until the Summer Solstice. Similarly, our bodies respond to the shorter daylight hours that follow from the Summer Solstice to the Fall Equinox, when once again hours of light and dark are equal, and on into the Dark Time of winter until we reach the Winter Solstice and the cycle begins anew.

Stonehenge Summer Solstice 2014

What does this cycle mean to us today? What can we do to make these changing seasons more a part of our lives when we no longer rise and work and sleep as the rising and setting of the sun dictates? One easy thing to do to help strengthen our awareness of this eternal cycle is to eat seasonally. Celebrate the first lettuce of the year with a big salad; rejoice in the abundance of peaches when they become available; enjoy broccoli when cooler weather prompts its growth. You may also share the seasonality by inviting friends to join you for a special meal.

Each season brings its own challenges and rewards, each cycle of seasons brings opportunities for recognizing and strengthening balance in our lives. Whatever the methods we choose, by incorporating greater awareness of Solstices and Equinoxes into our lives we not only live with more awareness of the seasonal balancing and re-balancing, we also live in greater harmony with the Earth.

Pranic Healing: It’s not Magic! It’s Just Energy!

By Renée Deubner

Ever had that uneasy tightness in your chest making it difficult to breathe?  Why, yes!  Hello, stress!

Stress and I have had a long relationship.  I would do yoga and meditations to feel better and alleviate stress, but it always kept coming back as soon as I was off the mat or the cushion.  I was taking the steps to live more stress-free, but I felt as though I was only getting so far with it.

That’s when I wandered into a pro-bono pranic energy healing clinic in Austin to give it a try.  What in the world did I have to lose?  It’s just energy!  Well, I did lose something ~ that tightness in my chest as well as a huge weight off my shoulders!  I came back week after week to release my stress, worry and anxiety.  I learned quickly that it’s not a one-and-done kind of healing.  The emotional junk comes back, or rather, new junk comes up to be released.  Now I’m a volunteer pranic energy healer in the same pro-bono clinic, helping others deal with their emotional and physical pain, and I have a much greater appreciation for how energy affects the body.

Pranic healing focuses on cleaning and energizing the major and minor chakras (energy centers) of body as well as the functions and organs related to those chakras.  pranic healing hand ball of energy - designed by Aberrant CrochetCertain chakras and organs hold onto negative emotions that can make us feel yucky!  Who knew that anger gets trapped in the liver?  And, guess where stress lives in the body?  Right where the tightness in the chest is felt: the solar plexus.  Just because stress is held in the solar plexus doesn’t mean that it’s not felt all over the body!  Tight jaw?  Grinding teeth?  Palpitations of the heart?  All the chakras, organs and their functions are related.

Pranic energy healing can remove this negative energy, but there’s a small caveat.  The patient has to be willing on some level to let it go, or the benefits of a healing will be brief.  And here’s caveat number 2:  long-term, long-lasting healing requires the patient to try to examine the emotional issue and then say, “I’m so done with this!!”  To me as a healer, the difference in the weight of the energy I’m clearing between someone who is ready to shift and someone who’s not ready to let go is like a bag of feathers versus a 200 lb. weight.  The feathers fly off the body whereas the 200 lb. weight is solid and sometimes refuses to move.

As a pranic healer, do I still get stressed?  You bet.  That’s part of living, BUT it’s nothing like it was before.  I have the awareness of when it shows up and some wonderful tools for dealing with it.

There’s nothing magical about pranic healing.  It’s just energy, and energy is infinite!  Do you think you might want to try it?  The pro-bono pranic healing clinics are a great way to see what it’s all about.  Check out Austin Pranic Healing on for a clinic location near you.

Let’s Talk About Laughter

By Emma Ferguson

Children laugh an average of 400-500 times a day. While adults, if they are lucky, will laugh maybe 15-18 times in a day.

Laughter is the best medicine

“A cheerful heart is good medicine…” Proverbs 17:22

The reality is that laughter is powerful medicine. Back in the 1970’s Norman Cousins was told that he had very little chance of surviving a devastating illness.  And yet he recovered by incorporating mega doses of vitamin C, along with a positive attitude and laughter induced by watching funny movies.

He made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give him at least two hours of pain-free sleep. That is because laughter helps the pituitary gland release its own pain-suppressing opiates.

Research has gone on to show that laughter can actually alter our perception. What before might have seemed impossible can become possible.

What can laughter do?

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Increase vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood
  • Give a workout to the diaphragm/abdominal/respiratory, facial, leg, back muscles
  • Reduce certain stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin
  • Increase the response of tumor and disease killing cells
  • Defend against respiratory infections — even reducing the frequency of colds by immunoglobulin in saliva
  • Increase memory and learning
  • Improve alertness, creativity and memory

Did You Know?

What may surprise you is the fact that researchers estimate that laughing 100 times is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike. Laughing can be a total body workout. Blood pressure is lowered and there is an increase in vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood. Laughter also gives your diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg and back muscles a workout. In other words, laughter is definitely an aerobic workout!

The psychological benefits of humor are quite amazing. People often store negative emotions such as anger, sadness and fear, rather than expressing them. Laughter provides a way for these emotions to be harmlessly released. Laughter is cathartic.

Increasingly, mental health professionals are suggesting “laughter therapy,” which teaches people how to laugh — openly — at things that aren’t usually funny and to cope in difficult situations by using humor.

We were made as social beings. When a baby is only a few months old, they connect with others through smiling and laughing.   Laughing is the universal language found in every group on earth. Laughter breaks down the barriers of culture, race, economic classes, nationality and governmental philosophies. No matter what differences we may have — we all respond the same way to something amusing –with a laugh.

Laughter is a magnet that draws us into social relationships. Laughter appears to lower our natural stranger anxiety making it easier for us to develop new friendships. Laughter is also the glue that keeps our relationships together. Laughter connects us with each other. When friends or family members share a humorous event such as a joke, it releases positive emotions that help us develop closeness and bind us together.

It is impossible to feel angry, depressed, anxious, guilty or resentful while you are laughing.  So laugh some more!

So… What’s The Deal With Crystal Skulls?

By Cindy Smith

“So what’s the deal with the skulls?”  Dennis and I have been asked this question hundreds of times during the past 20 years or so of our business.

Most people are surprised to learn that crystal skulls contain the knowledge of the ancestors and the wisdom of the ancients. In other societies in other parts of the world, people use skulls in their homes every day for that very reason.

Let’s examine the legend of the thirteen ancient crystal skulls.

This legend exists in virtually every native society on Earth. Think, for a moment about how many native societies that would be. The legend says that the thirteen ancient crystal skulls will come back into the awareness of mankind at a time that is crucial in the evolution of mankind and crucial in the evolution of Earth. That is why, for the past few years, we’ve been seeing skulls everywhere. They’re on hats, on clothing, on backpacks. Everywhere we look, skulls are portrayed as cool and desirable. They are coming back into our awareness, inundating our conscious at this critical time. But, for me, the most intriguing and compelling aspect of this is that the Ancients could have seeded literally ANYTHING here to come back into our awareness now, anything for us to use as the all-important tool at this critical time. They could have seeded crystal spheres, or crystal eggs, or crystal fish or crystal donuts. They could have seeded ANYTHING. But, the legend is about the thirteen ancient crystal skulls. This tells us that crystal skulls are very important.

OSH - Cindy and Dennis Smith - Austin Metaphysical Life Fair
So, what do crystal skulls do for you and why would someone choose to work with them?

Crystal skulls activate dormant parts of our DNA, reveal dormant abilities and begin the release of ancient wisdom buried deep within our consciousness. They accelerate our Spiritual Growth. They guide us, teach us, enlighten us and heal us. They encourage us to walk in faith. Their abilities to assist us are limited ONLY by us. As we open our hearts and minds to this process, we get a glimpse of the bigger picture. We begin to consider that we can do and be more than we thought.

Many of us are quite unexpectedly drawn to this process.

Come by our booth and join us in this adventure. Meet ‘Osh, the ancient jade skull that travels with us. Spend some time with him. He and his companions are eager to connect with you, to work with all of us. Each person’s experience is unique. We ask that you bring an open mind, and a respect for ‘ Osh, his companions and his process.

Fly Out Of Your Cage – by Tyffany Howard, JD

Local Author Spotlight…

Birds flying from their cage

Courtesy of photographer Lara Zankoul

Today, I was doing some spring cleaning and came across a short article entitled, How To Love Yourself, by Louise Hay in 1988. I have a tendency to collect inspirational or self-improvement material, but I don’t know how long I’ve had this article. When I found it, I was grateful that I had the forethought to save it and find it at just the right time.

Of the 10 suggestions for loving yourself, No. 7 seemed to resonate so strongly with my heart, that my soul had me stop what I was doing and sit still, letting the words really sink in. No.7 says: “Be loving to your negatives. Acknowledge that you created them to fulfill a need.” As I absorbed the words, I immediately heard my inner voice whisper, “your cage.” When I heard those words, “your cage,” I knew exactly what the voice was telling me. I recently published my first book and I realized that my negatives: self-sabotage, self-criticism, self-hatred, procrastination, self-judgment and self-punishment were standing guard at the door of an imaginary cage I had created for myself. These negatives, which I prefer to call my truths about what I believe, were created to support a belief. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks; I gave birth to these negatives in order to keep me small and to protect me. Every time, I feel like I’m on the cusp of something great or I’m coasting and it feels to good to be true, I summon my protectors. To my ego, this book was a bigger, better and abundant-producing experience, so my protectors mounted their horses, armed themselves and marched in front of the door of my cage. My mind had even created a not-so fun game called “let’s see how I can keep you in your place.”

At an early age, I learned that being big and living abundantly was dangerous. So little Tyffany’s ego had to create these dark friends (the negatives) to keep her safe. Little Tyffany’s belief that she would be criticized, ostracized, persecuted and disliked if she was visible was just enough to have her sprint to that cage herself. Little Tyffany became adult Tyffany and adult Tyffany didn’t want to become well-known and abundant because I might become greedy, live extravagantly, and lose my soul. Somehow, I equated living the life that I was intended to live with danger. So I created a cage and then these negatives (really fears) to protect me from becoming bigger, better and more abundant.

Now, as I look back over my life, I recognize each time my protectors interceded. Realizing what my ego had been doing, I had a releasing ceremony. I called all my negatives (fears) in one-by-one, speaking their names out loud, thanking each one for a job well done, told them that I no longer needed their protection and was freeing them and me, and then I released them by doing a couple of rounds of EFT tapping. Tapping on your body with your fingers and speaking the truth about how you feel can free you from the limitations that prevent you from living the life that you want to live. What negatives or truths have you created to fulfill a need? Do you want to be free of them? Learn EFT tapping so that you, too, can fly out of your cage.
